Our story and vision

From little things, big things grow. Paul Kelly and Kevin Carmody were so right when they sang the Australian classic used by so many institutions to show how much they've grown. Our mission is two-fold: to give our communities a voice, and to share our collective wisdom with children and their parents.

The Literature Factory is growing, and we couldn't be more thrilled. We've come so far from one teacher, tutoring a handful of students after school hours as a passion project, to servicing families across Brisbane in a range of subjects and skills. As our team has grown, so too have our collective talents. The Literature Factory aims to encapsulate the unique and varied talents of all of our tutors so that we can offer our families exceptional service, unique activities and quality educational experiences. Each child who comes under The Literature Factory umbrella is an individual, and they are treated as such. Pastoral care is an incredibly important element of our teaching model, and it infuses everything that we do. Each child is assessed to determine how best we can help them, and a program is developed just for them to assist in their learning journeys

In addition to our tutoring services, The Literature Factory is passionate about helping voices be heard within our communities. Our first publication was Vault of Verona from the Into the Abyss series, and the process was an enormous learning curve. The publishing industry can be a confusing and scary world, and there are so many services on offer that it can be hard to determine where you fit into it.
We are very proud to offer publishing assistance through The Literature Factory, and to be able to provide a platform for unique and powerful messages that might otherwise go unheard. We invite you to peruse our sections relating to different authors and their works. Generally speaking, we only publish full-length projects that we feel very strongly about. On the other hand, our Journal is in its infancy, with the first edition being published in 2018 and featuring our Creative Writing Competition winner for 2017. We are inviting submissions for short stories, poetry, artwork, photography and song lyrics. Help us tell our stories - the theme is 'Characters to make you think", and can be as literal or as abstract as you like.

The way that we see it, there are more or less three avenues you can take when considering how to get your book out to the world: traditional publishing, hybrid publishing and self publishing. The way books are published is changing significantly, both because of the introduction of eBooks and because of the decline of physical bookstores. Traditional publishing involves a contract from a large, medium or small publishing house that offers an advance against the sales of your work. In return, you hand over the right to control your book and how it is marketed. Self-publishing means that you do all the work of a traditional publisher, often without the connections. It is a hard, yet very rewarding experience. Hybrid publishing is described in two ways. Firstly, authors who choose hybrid publishing can choose to publish some of their books through a traditional publisher and some on their own (depending on their contracts). Secondly, hybrid publishing can be a front word for 'vanity' publishing. Vanity publishers offer to publish your work and essentially sell you editing/cover design/marketing services. You are still responsible for the marketing of your own book and ultimately, its success. Within the Australian publishing industry, vanity publishers do not have a good name. Many distributors will not deal with books published through a vanity firm because they are motivated by the money they receive from offering a service, rather than the intrinsic value of the work they are creating.

We are not, and never will be, a 'vanity' publisher.
Because publishing is a huge undertaking with numerous expenses, including a great deal of time and effort, we will only work with manuscripts that we feel very passionately about.  Our Head of Publishing works one on one with individuals to help them develop their labour of love into a physical product ready for sale and distribution. We are partial to series publications in the children's, young adult and clean adult categories. Where appropriate, we work with authors around their websites and recommend independent contractors and businesses for services such as editing, printing and illustrating. If you have questions about publishing that you would like to discuss, we will do our best to help you.

We are looking forward to watching our little business grow in 2018 and beyond.
